The Option of Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric Surgery, or a surgical solution for obese people, has become very safe and the benefits can truly be life changing. There are two kinds of surgery, the first being the gastric bypass procedure that we have heard so much about for years. A patient having this surgery has their stomach reduced to the size of a small pouch that can hold only a small amount of food. The Lap-Band procedure involves placing an inflatable ring around some portion of the stomach, again reducing its size; this minimally invasive surgery is completely reversible.

Patients that have undergone one of these surgeries not only improve their health, they often find their lives changed in ways they would never have dreamed. As they lose weight and begin to move around more, they often find themselves enjoying a walk around the block that just months previous they wouldn't have been able to do. People who have had bariatric surgery usually find themselves with friends, sometimes for the first time in their life! This isn't because they're losing weight so much as they are finally getting out into the world and participating in so many activities.

There is also a new enjoyment of shopping. Many patients are delighted as their size diminishes and they are able to wear flattering clothes in any color or pattern they please, without fear of it making them look fat. Those days are gone! Others report their marriages improved; by being more active, they're having fun with their spouse again and recapturing the romance that may have dwindled. Single patients find that they enjoy dating and many feel as if they're truly living for the first time in their lives.

The physical benefits of bariatric surgery, though, are astounding. As the patient loses weight, a tremendous strain is taken off the heart and the lungs. They find themselves breathing easier and their blood pressure becomes more normal. Knees and feet that formerly were painful now function as they should and the pain is a thing of the past. Finally losing the weight they've tried so hard to shed in the past adds years of life and the quality of that life is limited only by the imagination!

Bariatric surgery isn't for everyone. Only people with at least a hundred pounds to lose is considered and they must pass a psychological evaluation that tests their suitability for the procedure. Rarely, obesity is caused by a previously undiscovered medical condition that may be corrected with medication rather than surgery.Read more article on Dallas Bariatric Surgery.

People who do undergo the procedure are carefully monitored, coached and encouraged until they reach their goal weight. Nutritional education, counseling and other help is extended to those who decide to lose weight surgically. Those who have had bariatric surgery to attain their goal weight say that it's the best thing they've ever done for themselves. Many lives have been saved as well as changed for the better with bariatric surgery. For more information visit Dallas Bariatric Surgery.
